Earthlings by Sayaka Murata

This book is pretty dark -- it tackles the question: why do we have to have kids? why do we have to go to work? Building on her earlier work "Convenience Store Woman," in which a woman lets a crazy man move in to her apartment so that people stop asking why she's single, this novel sees society as a "factory" -- either you procreate and work, or they will be out to get you!!!

Living in Japan book review!!!

This is basically a cool photo book! It's really relaxing to look at this Japanese homes, and their zen gardens!!! My only complaint is that this book doesn't really address the hustle and bustle of the city, but whatever! The title of this book should be "Peaceful pictures of Japanese homes."

"Dancing Bears" by Witold Szablowski Reviw

PAge xvi:
""Let him beat me, let him treat me badly, but let him relieve me of this goddamned need to deal with my own life," the bear seemed to be saying."

Page 13:
"For me, Communism was a wonderful time. I'm sorry I didn't have a bear then. People wee in better moods. They were happy. But nowadays there's nothing but frustration. Everyone's chasing his own tail."

page 66:
"Ivanov's dream is to release the real predator's instinct in them. But how can that be done? "Of course, we could release some chickens and see if our bears would go after them," he conjectures. "But that would be contrary to our values, which holds that every creature deserves respect. We'd never do that."
How do you exercise that instinct in these conditions? It's a very good question, to which Ivanov has been seeking the answer for several years. And he has an idea. In the near future, he's planning to tie thin ropes between two trees at two different heights, to form a square. He'll attach a dead fish to the ropes. With the help of a special small motor, the fish will move up, left, down, and right around the square. And to satisfy his hunger, the bear will have to catch it."

page 87
"But what could our mother bears teach their offspring? Maybe just that when a truck comes along, there's going to be food."

Count Fujiwara's Suffering revisted

I already reviewed this book before, but I liked it so much that I read it again!!!

I like it because it's about a girl who is a shut-in and doesn't go out because she has bad anxiety, but she still gets into trouble! Basically the cat, named Count, saves the day, but always gets blamed at the end of the  day, thus the title! The cat's suffering continues! However, this book is a comedy!!!

For me this is a fun book, that I really like reading -- and it addresses important issues like sadness, anxiety, feelings of inadequateness in a funny way!!!

Sleep*Core: Asleep by Banana Yoshimoto

p. 141 "Nothing exists in this world but me and my bed. . . ."

Cool book, okay I read it because the author's name is Banana! Isn't that so funny? That's so funny!!! It turns out that that's the author's pen name!!! After deep investigative reporting, her real name is: Mahoko Yoshimoto.

I guess this book belongs to the genre of sleep-core, books about sleeping!!! Another sleeping book is "My Year of Rest and Relaxation." I also read another book about sleeping but I forgot what it's called!!!

I slept for a whole month in February 2014. Sleeping gets boring thouhg, and I'm so scared of bad dreams!!! Basically sleeping is a poor means of escape!!! I read in a magazine that Netflix's biggest competitor is sleeping, and that videos are a commodified form of sleeping!

Reading is okay, though? Right? Sometimes at night I wake up and I feel scared, because everyone i know will die, and we'll have to lose everything. Life is so scary, so I listen to the news to feel better because at least those things make me forget my problems.

So this book is actually a collection of 3 short stories! They were good, except short stories are hard for me! You'd think they would be easy to read, because they're short, right? But my complaint is that you get used to these characters, and you get invested in the plot, and then all of a sudden, POOF! The story is over, and the next story is up, and you have to learn all these new characters and new plots -- TOO MUCH WORK!

Nevertheless, this book was okay! It had some ghosts and some weird things! Oh, and now after writing all this, I remember the other book that I read about sleeping, it was Murakami's After Dark!!! One of the characters was sleeping non-stop in the book, the main character's sister! I forgot if she woke up or not, but it was a good book! A little anticlimactic at the end, but good writing! BTW, I took a nap today! During the day, I feel less scared about life than at night time. Night time is so scary!!! It's like everyone is dead at night-time or something! Spooky!!!

Hi! So I have a ton of magazines that are taking up space, so I'm like documenting any interesting stuff before I trash the magazine for recycling!!!
The Baffler Mar-Apr 2019 issue
Page 7: "Compared to the mind, the body can be thought of as an animal, usually domesticated or partially domesticated animal."
Okay, I think that's sort of true. In my mind, I want to do so many things, but my body is so lazy, so I basically wind up doing very little! It's so hard to manage my life, it's like a lazy donkey -- I dunno what to do!!! I'm like please work hard, and my body is like, "I don't think so."

Picture
Paper September 2019
page 83: ""I reject love!" Tierra interrupts."
Okay, kewl! Love is SO over-rated! Right? I mean, who cares about love? Everyone still dies, and you still have to go to work everyday, and love is not a gift at all -- it's a ton of hard work -- a HUGE hassle, in other words!

And here was an article about pro-gaming.
Page 91: "Any pro player can just sit around and game and make a decent living, but if you grow your brand, you can become hufe and you might have a whole other career path ahead of you... And I think a lot of [pro players] who aren't doing it -- the streaming and YouTube -- are going to regret it when they're older."
Words to live by, don't you agree?

Alfred Jarry: A pataphysical Life review by Alastair Brotchie

I actually read this a long time ago!!! But my mom went away for the weekend, so this was my chance to review some books without her bothering me and stuff!!!

Alfred Jarry is a famous author! He is so cool! He is like the grandfather of Dadaism and Surrealism, but his life was not easy and stuff, but besides dying at an early age, he also was an author! He is an author that I look up to!!!

He is a cool author! I wish I could be an author, but I'm too lazy!!! I can't even write this blog in any kind of consistent way ;'( I am so sad!

I read because reading helps the day go by more painlesslessly. Words are a portal device, but their effects are only temporary.
